PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is the world’s leading forest certification system. As an international non-profit, non-governmental organization, we are dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.
We endorse national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions. We believe that forest certification needs to be local; this is why we choose to work with national organizations to advance responsible forestry.
Forest certification is at our core. We provide forest owners, from the large to the small, with a tool to demonstrate their responsible practices, while empowering consumers and companies to buy sustainably.
We were founded by small- and family forest owners to demonstrate excellence in sustainable forest management. 20 years on, more than 300 million hectares of forests are certified to our internationally recognized Sustainability Benchmarks. These forests supply over 20,000 PEFC Chain of Custody certified companies with sustainably sourced forest-based products.
Celebrating our 20th anniversary
20 years ago, European small-forest owners came together to create an international forest certification system that had their needs at heart. On 30 June 1999, PEFC was born.
This year, we are celebrating the achievements from 20 years of caring for forests globally and locally, telling the story of PEFC, from the early ideas back in 1999, until today.
This is why we chose Würzburg for the 2019 PEFC Forest Certification Week and PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue. In April 1999, stakeholders met in Würzburg and it proved to be a turning point in our history. It was the moment when everyone involved committed to the creation of PEFC: there was no turning back!
Now we are going back, and while it is important to remember our history, the Stakeholder Dialogue will take a future forward approach. Together, we will look at the next steps towards moving sustainability and certification from niche to mainstream.
